The Book of Broken Words

The written, broken and repaired dishes presented here came from flea markets and house clearances in Berlin. They were given to me or sold at a nominal price. For me, these delicate vessels are a metaphor for the fragility of language, which we use, expect to express –and alter– every day.

Each piece invites reflection on how language influences our social and political perspectives. The sentences and expressions come from a subjective feeling that something is broken when I hear or read them. Promises, slogans, statements that feel distorted yet holding a truth, a desire,... something that keeps me hooked – to them and those writing and saying them.

Some are very personal, others are considered as universal truth...

This is The Book of Broken Words, initiated at the Immobilty Salon #1 by dancer and choreographer Alix Eynaudi, and now explored as a sculptural practice. Pieces, or maybe rather pages, got exhibited at The Festival of Future Nows, neue National Galerie, ("Wir haben Platz", "Life is wonderful"), Europa ohne Ende, Spor Klübü ("Thas was just the Beginning") and ATB120–Practices of Solidarity, after the butcher ("... the limits of my language mean the limits of my world mean the limits of ...").
